                                        Curriculum and Literacy Specialist at the Elementary School Level 



Job Description:

A curriculum and literacy specialist is a member of the school faculty who works closely with the school administrators, teachers, teaching assistants, and tutors.  The curriculum and literacy specialist will provide strategies for teachers to support students in the literacy skills needed for learning to read, reading to learn, increasing comprehension and all areas of total school improvement. This position will also include working within professional learning communities for all contents and supporting learning strategies and providing resources to assist teachers in their day-to-day teaching.  Additionally, the curriculum and literacy specialist is a teacher for students experiencing reading difficulties.  The curriculum and literacy specialist will work with analyzing data and monitoring the Multi-Tiered System of Support process in the school.  In some elementary schools the curriculum and literacy specialist will also serve AIG students. This position will work closely with the Curriculum and Instruction (C &  I)  team serving elementary schools. 



Qualifications: 

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree, current North Carolina Teacher Licensure, and a minimum of five years successful classroom teaching experience
  • Preferred: Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, or Reading and/or Reading CertificationReading Research to Classroom Practice (completed course and willingness to seek training certification)
  • AIG Certification or willingness to obtain AIG certification 
  • Proficient technology skills 
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills 
  • Strong instructional skills inclusive of oral and written communication

 

Responsibilities:

 

Under the direction of the principal and the district C & I team, the responsibilities of this position fall into four categories.  

  1. As a teacher, the Curriculum and Literacy specialist is responsible for providing direct instruction and Tier 3 interventions to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop skills needed to be successful in elementary school. 
  2. As a literacy and curriculum coach, the position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program based on evidence-based instruction at the assigned school through coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers during Professional Learning Communities in best practices for literacy instruction.
  3. As the interventionist, the Curriculum and Literacy Specialist must have the ability to analyze mCLASS Dibels 3D, stay abreast of research-based practices, and support teachers and students with appropriate interventions. Additionally, work with the administrator and guidance counselor to lead the school-level MTSS team. 
  4. Work with school administrators and teachers to plan, implement, teach, and support students during Summer Read to Achieve Reading Camp.

 

School-Level Literacy Teacher:

  • Coordinate, facilitate, and implement school-level Intervention Programs 
  • Provide direct, intensive instruction to struggling students within the MTSS Framework 
  • Organize, train, and coach teaching assistants and tutors 
  • Provide school-level professional development for MTSS support as needed.
  • Monitor school data for MTSS. 
  • Provide essential leadership and support for the school’s entire school improvement goals, including providing support to beginning teachers and professional learning communities 

 

 

School-Level Curriculum and Literacy Coach:

  • Serve as a PLC member with other School-Level Curriculum and Literacy Specialists (district) and support K-5 school-level PLCs (school), support the implementation of MTSS. 
  • Work with SCS Lead Elementary Curriculum and Literacy Coaches and Assistant Superintendent supervising curriculum
  • Grow professionally in pursuit of helping students become better readers
  • Attend professional development to enhance the knowledge of pedagogy with a focus on literacy including evidence-based instruction
  • Serve as a resource for teachers and school administrators including modeling lessons, co-teaching lessons, and planning reading lessons
  • Provide professional development at (school level and/or district level) to implement various instructional strategies with a focus on literacy
  • Complete and collect evidences for the Title-1 Federal Programs documentation requirements 
  • Generate, interpret, and make instructional recommendations from i-Ready reports
  • Remain grounded in the content standards and objectives in order to facilitate integrated and concept-based instruction
  • Assist teachers with collection of data, analysis of data results, and support the sharing of findings with staff through the work of Professional Learning Communities
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
  • Provide essential leadership for the school’s entire literacy program as well as curriculum support to teachers such as instructional coaching, leading professional development to enhance strategies, resource management and helping organize special events at the school level. 

 

Reading Intervention Specialist

  • Serve as an active member school level MTSS in diagnosing reading deficits and creating plans with skill-specific interventions to address specific student needs
  • Collaborate with teachers to identify the literacy needs of students
  • Problem-solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth for students in literacy
