Description | Certification and License Requirements
- Within 60 days of hire possess a Class A CDL including Tanker (N), Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Obtain School Bus Inspection Certification within 180 days of employment.
- Obtain forklift certification.
Education, Training, and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 2 years work experience or associate degree on diesel engines.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Identifies, diagnoses, and repairs any worn components such as push rods, sway bars, valve springs, injectors, head assembly, rocker arms, valve seals, head and intake gaskets.
- If needed, replace water pumps, oil pumps, power steering pumps, starters, EGR coolers, electronic control modules, alternators, radiators, hoses, belts, king-pins, exhaust pipes, and many other repair issues on buses and vehicles.
- Maintains accurate accounting of truck inventory and parts checked out of parts room.
- Performs engine oil and filter changes; performs chassis lubrication.
- Performs minor vehicle checks making necessary repairs and replacements.
- Operates wrecker and tows school system vehicles.
- Operates the forklift as required to off-load and store bulky, packaged supplies and parts such as tires, engine assemblies, transmissions, oil, anti-freeze, seat foams, and any other related items.
- Check, add, and replace brake and steering fluids.
- Replace brake drums on school and activity buses.
- Add oil and air to vehicles; replace wiper blades and fan belts.
- Rotate and replace tires on vehicles and buses.
- Remove and replace filters; drain and clean radiators.
- Test and replace batteries as needed.
- Repair and replace broken windows and windshields on school buses.
- Inspect exterior and interior of vehicles for defects.
- Checks wiring system for different electrical problems; checks and repairs all lights, switches, buzzers, gauges; repairs and replaces steering wheel and horn kit, headlights, brake lights, light covers, and bulbs.
- Performs required scheduled preventive maintenance services and scheduled 30-day inspections on school and activity buses.
- Completes and turns in TD-18 forms on time.
- General housekeeping of buildings and grounds at Transportation Services.
- Perform general maintenance as needed.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Transportation Director.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including trucks, buses, wrecker, forklift, and lifts.
- Must be able to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, 25 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to lift or carry weights of 50 to 100 lbs. Physical demand requirements are for Medium to Heavy Work.
- Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information including receiving instructions, assignments, and directions from superiors.
- Requires the ability to complete work orders, service records, and vehicle maintenance reports.
- Requires the ability to add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; and to determine percentages and decimals.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts.
- Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
- Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
- Willing to be called in before and after normal working hours and on the weekend.
