ertification and License Requirements
- Class A or B CDL with P and S endorsements
- Possess a DOT Medical Card
Education, Training, and Experience
- Minimum high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Must be 18 years old with six months driving experience, prefer applicants to be 21 years old.
- Complete three days of classroom training and up to three days of behind-the-wheel training.
Qualifications
- Must pass a DOT drug and alcohol test
- Must pass a background check
Responsibilities and Duties
- Transports students safely and efficiently meeting required transit needs of the student by obeying all traffic laws and follows NC school bus rules and regulations governing the safe bus operation.
- Performs required pre-trip, post-trip inspections, and report mechanical defects.
- Must inspect the bus for occupants at the conclusion of each run in the designated parking area.
- Maintains discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.
- Reports undisciplined students to the responsible school assistant principal or principal.
- Discharges students only at the authorized school or assigned bus stop.
- Transports only authorized student riders.
- Keeps the school bus clean and free of papers, bottles, cans, gum, food wrappers, and other items which may present a safety problem.
- Reports all accidents and remains at the scene of the accident until released by the on-scene transportation supervisor.
- Performs daily student counts.
- Operates school bus on an assigned route and schedule provided by school Transportation.
- Assist all students off the bus in emergency situations.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read, write, and maintain records.
- Must have good people skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, administrators, supervisors, school employees, parents, and students.
- Attend recommended and required training for safe vehicle operation.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically able to operate a school bus.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Requires sufficient hearing ability to distinguish warning sounds made by horns, sirens, alarms, and train whistles.
- Driver will be exposed to airborne particles and potential odors while transporting students.
- Able to climb steps multiple times daily.
- Must be able to quickly decelerate a school bus and firmly apply the brake in an emergency situation.
- Must be able to turn the steering wheel of the vehicle rapidly in an emergency situation.
- Must be able to begin in a seated position with seat belt fastened, parking brake released, and engine running, secure the bus (parking brake set, key removed) rise from the seat, proceed to the rearmost emergency exit, and be in position to assist passengers in exiting the bus within 20 seconds.
- Must be able to exert up to 25 lbs. of force frequently and 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
- Requires the ability to recognize colors of traffic signals and signs.
- Safely work in situations of possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens requiring specialized personal protective equipment.
